Ice clouds play a major role in the Global Hydrological Cycle; more than 90% of precipitation in mid- to high- latitudes originate from such clouds.
At high-latitudes, there is also a significant fraction of precipitation occurring in the form of snowfall. The natural variability of snow particle sizes, number concentrations, shapes, and densities makes ice clouds and snowfall one of the biggest challenges not only for weather and climate modelers but also for observationalists.

Following the success of the 1st International Summer Snowfall Workshop that took place in 2017 in Cologne, we are organizing the second meeting which will be held at the University of Helsinki Hyytiälä Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations. The main focus of the workshop will be on connecting observations and models of ice clouds and precipitation. This includes improving parametrizations of ice microphysics needed for cloud models and remote sensing retrievals, linking ice particle physical and scattering properties, as well as advances in measurements by both in situ and remote sensing.
The workshop will be organized as a mixture of oral and poster presentations, invited overview talks and panel discussions.

Venue: The Hyytiälä Station located about 250 km north of Helsinki. The station provides a meeting place and accommodation next to a lake in the middle of a Finnish forest. There are two traditional saunas, which will be available for the course attendees.

Schedule: We will organize the transportation from Helsinki to Hyytiälä and back. On Tuesday, August 27th at 14.00 we will collect the workshop participants from Helsinki. It is expected that we will come back to Helsinki around 12.30 on Friday 30th August.

Participation costs: The workshop fee is 300 €, which covers the cost of accommodation, all meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee, and dinner), the social program (boreal dinner and sauna) and the transfers between Helsinki and Hyytiälä.
